INTRODUCTION
On the news today, a famous lawmaker said, “Shapes are useless. People can’t eat shapes. They can’t ride in shapes. They can’t work or play in shapes.” The lawmaker wants to pass a law to get rid of all the shapes in the world. Unless someone can prove that shapes are important, all shapes soon could be banned from the country. No more morning circle activities! No more stars on perfect papers! No more Valentine hearts!
TASK
To keep the law from being passed, you and your classmates must prove that shapes are important.
PROCESS
Work alone or with a partner to complete the activities.
• Step 1: Click to hear the Story of Shapes. Complete the Shape Activity worksheet your teacher gives you.
• Step 2: Click to Learn Your Colors and Shapes. Complete the Shapes and Colors worksheet your teacher gives you.
• Step 3: Cut out the balloon on the Balloon worksheet your teacher gives you. Glue the balloon to a piece of black paper. Cut out the shapes at the bottom of the Balloon worksheet. Glue the shapes to the correct spaces inside the balloon. Glue cotton ball clouds to the black paper. Write your name on your paper.
• Step 4: Click to see some Circles, Squares, Triangles, Rectangles, Ovals, and Diamonds in the world. Then, look around your classroom. Find one object that's the same shape as each of the shapes on the Shape Scavenger Hunt worksheet. Draw a picture of that object on the worksheet.
• Step 5: Listen to The Shape of Me and Other Stuff, by Dr. Seuss, and make a list of why shapes are important. Then, play Shape Bingo with your classmates.
• Step 6: Take home the Shapes Coloring Book to color with your family.

Rationale for using this Web 2.0 tool with this activity:
As the students explore these shapes of rectangles and arches, they will find that they will have more and more questions concerning specific facts. Triangles are used extensively in bridge design and the Romans used arches for strength and load-bearing properties. There are many concepts that go into bridge design and understanding the mathematics behind the Roman arch is not simplistic. This wiki would allow for students to build their own knowledge and exchange thoughts on the varying aspects. What I liked about this particular wiki is that is that I could password protect it. Thereby, only allowing for my students to contribute knowledge and create different thought patterns. It simply gives the teacher the ability to offer the class a collaborative document to work on, negotiate meaning, and construct knowledge.
