EDUC 5611 Lesson from Module 5

Description of lesson – Students draw a picture of what they think a computer looks like inside. Then they explore! Students will explore the inside of a computer in an online activity, learn the function of each part of a computer, the definitions of unfamiliar computer terms and complete a quick check of definitions of computer parts. Students will create their own personal dictionary of computer terms to be added to throughout the year as they learn more computer terms.

Rationale for using this Web 2.0 tool with this activity:
This tool offers free computer courses in google search skills, keyboarding skills, and safe internet usage. After gaining a better understanding of the physical components of a computer, these lessons would be wonderful introductions into some of the uses for the computer in a classroom setting, especially for those less technology exposed children.

Summary –This lesson helps students match what they already know or think they know about computers and their operating systems with factual information. The students access this information through several links attached to the listed site. I would do this lesson in whole group form, preferably on a large display. Each student will get to create their own pictures and dictionaries. I would have my students draw a picture before the lesson, and then draw another picture after the lesson and have them compare and contrast and see how their thinking and understanding changed from before and after.
