Keeping it real... real professional

I teach third grade, and I plan on using this lesson next year with my creative writing unit. This lesson can be adapted to fit any grade level.

Buddy Books. Each third grader will be assigned a first grader to interview, finding out about their family, birthday, friends, pets, and favorite things. Using this information, the third graders will write a story, using their first grader as the main character and the information from the interview as the basis for the story. The stories will be published in book form by the sixth graders, complete with cover and a sewn binding. During Children's Book Week, the third graders will present the books to their first-grade partners and share some reading time with them.

URL of the Web 2.0 tool you selected for use with this activity:

http://wave.google.com/ and http://www.tikatok.com/

Rationale for using this Web 2.0 tool with this activity:

Google Wave (though not available until later this year) would allow my students to post questions to targeted students. Those students could then respond to questions, post pictures, videos, maps, etc. for my students to incorporate in the books they are writing. The students being interviewed can post and paste anywhere on the document in Google Wave, which is very convenient for the interviewing process.

Tikatok allows the children to create and publish their own books online. This is a free site and friends can collaborate! The students will use this site to create their buddy books.

I hope you guys are able to use this lesson!

What a wonderful idea! This is an excellent way to integrate Web 2.0 into the classroom. This would be so much fun for the students. I will have to have to check out the websites you have provided.

This is a great idea. I am planning on teaching secondary school and believe that I can adapt this for the appropriate grade level.
